The BC Coroners Service will hold a public inquest into the death of a Vancouver Island man who was shot and killed by a Victoria police officer in 2014.

The inquest into 20-year-old Rhett Mutch’s death will commence May 15 at the Victoria Supreme Court.

Coroner Donita Kuzma and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding Mutch’s death.

The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentations of evidence relating to a death.

The 20-year-old Victoria man was fatally shot inside his mother’s home on Dallas Road in November 2014.

Police were called to the property by a woman who said her son had broken in and was threatening himself with a knife.

In June 2016, B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office cleared the officer of any wrongdoing.

In November, Mutch’s mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Victoria Police Department.

The civil claim argued that the actions of the officers were negligent and in violation of use-of-force law.
