Fire crews in Port Hardy are crediting a new ladder truck for helping them save an apartment building that burst into flames early Wednesday morning.

Fire broke out at the Creekside Apartments on Granville Street at Highland Drive at around 3:45 a.m.

A 26-man crew that included mutual aid from other jurisdictions battled the blaze, saving the building from total destruction.

No one suffered any injuries in the fire.

The entire 48-unit building is currently uninhabitable and emergency social services is seeking accommodation for about 20 residents.

Brent Borg, chief of the Port Hardy Volunteer Fire Department, said the town’s only ladder truck was purchased last month and was just put into service on Friday.

He said the equipment helped save the building, knocking flames down so crews could enter and attack the fire from the inside.
