A 60-year-old man struck by a semi-trailer truck on a Nanaimo highway Wednesday afternoon has died, according to police.

RCMP said the pedestrian was struck near the intersection of Aulds Road and the Nanaimo Parkway just after 4 p.m.

According to witnesses and the truck driver, the man was trying to cross the parkway when he was struck. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with police.

It was initially reported the man was rushed to a nearby hospital, but Mounties have since confirmed he died before being transported.

Drugs and alcohol are not considered contributing factors.

Police said it was raining at the time and roads were wet when the crash occurred, and the pedestrian was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing.

The incident shut down northbound lanes and tied up traffic in the area for hours Wednesday afternoon.

An RCMP traffic analyst and the BC Coroners Service were called in to investigate.

An RCMP victim services team also attended the scene to provide assistance to the truck driver.

The pedestrian’s next-of-kin have been notified and an investigation is still underway, according to RCMP.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact an RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit at 250-754-2345.
