The Ministry of Forests has reopened the highway between Lake Cowichan and Port Renfrew after a wildfire shut down the route for several weeks.

Pacific Marine Drive is once again open to vehicle traffic as crews get a handle on a 393-hectare fire burning near Lizard Lake.

The fire is now 70 per cent contained, according to the Coastal Fire Centre.

Firefighters have removed dangerous trees along the highway and cleared away debris, but the ministry reminded drivers of public access restrictions for areas surrounding the highway.

The ministry has also prohibited stopping from the seven-kilometre mark to the three-kilometre mark of the road.

The Lizard Lake fire is believed to be human-caused and remains under investigation.

It has not put any structures or communities at risk, but has occasionally caused haze to flow through low-lying areas of the Cowichan Valley.
