Following a string of sexual assaults in Saanich, the University of Victoria is looking to educate its students on sexual violence prevention.

The university said it will hire a specialized co-ordinator to focus on prevention programs.

It was one of the recommendations listed in a report that examined sexual assaults on campus.

The university’s director of student affairs calls it a good first step, but says there’s still much more to be done to create a comprehensive policy on dealing with and preventing sexual violence.

The school's decision comes after a number of recent assaults in the Gordon Head area.

Earlier this month UVic announced a new intervention workshop, aimed at raising awareness and educating students about preventing sexualized violence.

The voluntary course called “Bringing in the Bystander” will help students learn skills to defuse potentially unsafe situations.
