New Democrat public safety critic Mike Farnworth says B.C. can take the lead in curbing potentially deadly fentanyl overdoses by restricting access to pill presses and tablet machines.

Farnworth has tabled a bill during this week's summer sitting of the legislature mirroring one already in effect in Alberta.

He believes if ownership of pill presses and tablet machines is limited, drug sellers would be stripped of an easy way to dispense fentanyl, which has already been blamed for 371 overdose deaths in BC between January and June.

Farnworth says pill presses are highly regulated in the United States, police in B.C. have been asking for the same restrictions, and his bill would include jail time and fines up to $375,000 dollars for anyone possessing one of the machines. (CFAX)
