A Mountie in Nanaimo suffered cuts and bruises when he tried to nab a prolific offender spotted in a taxi.

Officers saw 31-year-old Spencer Schaeffer, wanted on several outstanding warrants, in the back seat of a taxi parked on Old Victoria Road Wednesday.

They approached Schaeffer and advised him he was under arrest, but when they tried to remove him from the cab the driver hit the gas pedal, according to RCMP.

That caused one officer to fall onto the road, sustaining some road rash and bruising. The Mountie did not end up requiring medical attention.

Schaeffer fled the taxi but was tracked down a short distance away by police dog Boomer, suffering minor puncture wounds that he was later treated for in hospital.

Mounties say Schaeffer was wanted on four unendorsed warrants and will now face additional charges as a result of his actions including two breach-related charges, flight from police and possession of ammunition, after officers found two .22-calibre bullets on him.

A woman who was with him in the taxi was also arrested on an outstanding warrant but later released on a promise to appear in court.

Police initially arrested the taxi driver for dangerous driving, but no charges have been laid against him.
