Nanaimo RCMP say they’re on the lookout for a man who stabbed a stranger in broad daylight over the weekend before robbing him.

The victim, a mid-40s male, was walking on a path behind Chapters on Mary Ellen Drive around 11 a.m. Sunday when a stranger approached from the opposite direction, according to police.

Police say the man didn’t speak to the victim, who felt the thief pulling at his backpack as he passed by.

The victim tried to stop the man from taking his backpack and was stabbed with an edged weapon. The attacker ran off with his backpack and jacket, police said.

Officers responding to the incident were unable to track down the attacker with a canine unit and have issued a description to the public to try to find him.

He’s described as a First Nations male in his early 30s, 5’6” with short, spiked black hair, and was wearing green sunglasses, a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

The victim suffered a non-life threatening stab wound and attended a Nanaimo hospital where he was treated and released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
