Potentially damaging thunderstorms are expected to develop over western Washington State and the South Coast of B.C. late today.
A special weather statement is in effect for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands as thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours, hail and intense lightning develop late this afternoon and overnight. Localized heavy downpours of 15-25 millimetres are possible, along with the risk of hail.
All of this is thanks to a warm, humid airmass moving in from the south today. As it combines with an approaching cold front, conditions will become unstable and favourable for the development of thunderstorms over Vancouver Island. Over to the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound and Whistler, these storms are expected to be more intense. As a result a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued by Environment Canada.
Until the dramatic weather approaches, temperatures will be above seasonal average today with plenty of sunshine for most of the island. That is, once the fog and cloud lifts.
