Charges are being recommended against three people after an arrest turned violent in downtown Victoria on Friday.

Police responded to the 400-block of Johnson Street around 6 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault taking place.

“They were here fast and it was probably 12 or 13 cruisers that showed up within a matter of minutes,” Marc Baker, a witness, told CTV News.

After police arrested one man, two other people became “hostile and violent” towards a single officer, VicPD says.

Three other police officers were injured during the incident.

“They were struggling quite a bit, making a lot of noise,” Baker said.

The arrested individuals were then taken to the VicPD cells where a jail staff member was also assaulted.

All five injured police officers were transported to hospital and have been released.

A 28-year-old Victoria woman, a 25-year-old Esquimalt man and a 31-year-old Saanich man were arrested at the scene.

Police are recommending several charges including assaulting a police officer and assault causing bodily harm.

The woman and 31-year-old man were released from custody on Saturday morning.

The 25-year-old man remains in custody and will appear in court on Monday.
