The first shipment of steel for Victoria’s new Johnson Street Bridge arrived in B.C. over the weekend.

City officials say over the next few days it will be loaded onto a barge at the Lynnterm Terminal in North Vancouver and then be transported to Victoria.

The shipment includes the north and south rings, the lower counterweight and the temporary structure used to support the various components of the bridge during installation.

The second shipment will include the two steel trusses, the deck that cars and bikes will travel across and the pedestrian and multi-use pathways.

It’s being loaded onto a ship in China and will leave for B.C. this week. The shipment is scheduled to arrive in Victoria at the end of September.

The new Johnson Street Bridge is set to open next spring, nearly three years behind schedule.
