The province is providing a bit of relief for drivers sick of getting stuck in hours-long traffic jams while construction is underway on the Malahat Highway.

A $34-million safety upgrade is underway to widen a five-kilometre stretch of the busy route from two lanes two four, but it’s been leading to traffic jams like the one this past Friday.

On that day, drivers reported a nightmare commute – with some saying their usually 15-minute drive took more like two hours.

B.C.’s transportation ministry has now pledged to no longer allow any traffic stoppages on Fridays in an effort to help things run more smoothly.

If traffic is still bad this Friday, the province says it will consider modifying the highway to ensure that are two northbound lanes throughout most of the construction zone, if not all of it.

The government also says it’s thinking about boosting the speed limit in the construction area above 60 km/h.
