Major crime investigators are probing what they say is the suspicious death of a toddler in Victoria.

Officers were called to a home in the 1200-block of Vista Heights at around 6 a.m. Wednesday to check on the welfare of people living there.

That’s when they found the unresponsive 18-month-old girl and attempted to revive her in vain.

Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after and pronounced her dead, according to police.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death are unclear and foul play has not been ruled out, said Victoria Police Insp. Keith Lindner.

The infant’s mother was taken to hospital in medical distress where she remained Wednesday afternoon, Lindner said.

“It goes from the realm of sadness to tragedy when a child dies,” he said.

He added he’s confident there is no danger to the public.

No charges have been laid and both the Vancouver Island Major Crime Unit and Victoria Police are investigating.

Police released a statement saying their thoughts were with the girl’s family, and that responding officers were “deeply impacted” by the incident.
