There was an increased police presence at a high school in Duncan Friday after an anonymous threat was posted to social media.

Cowichan Secondary School officials said they were made aware of the threat Thursday and activated its Violence Threatre Risk Assessment Protocol.

Police did not disclose the nature of the threat other than to say it was considered low-level.

The school remain open for the day but out of precaution, Mounties were called in to maintain a presence at the school for the day.

Island District RCMP confirmed they were made aware of the threat but said there was nothing to indicate it was credible. 

"We are investigating and take threats of this nature very seriously," said spokeswoman Cpl. Tammy Douglas.

The incident has the Cowichan Valley School District asking parents to reminding their kids that threats made on social media, even as a prank, can have serious consequences including criminal charges.
