A Nanaimo man in his early 20s has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a serious early morning crash.

Police say the man’s wrecked vehicle was discovered by a passing driver on White Rapids Road at around 2 a.m. after it apparently lost control and crashed.

The victim was alone in his vehicle, according to police. An air ambulance was dispatched and landed at Chase River Elementary School, and paramedics transported the man to hospital in serious condition.

Police say the driver was still wearing his seatbelt when first responders arrived, and that without the belt or his airbags deploying, he wouldn’t have survived the impact.

White Rapids Road was closed for hours Friday as police, including a collision reconstructionist team, investigated.

The Nanaimo RCMP Municipal Traffic Unit is conducting a further investigation.

It’s unclear what caused the crash, but police are asking anyone with information to call them at 250-754-2345.
