A Nanaimo brewery has taken home top honours at the World Beer Awards in London, England.

White Sails Brewery nabbed the prize for best black IPA with its Snake Island Cascadian Dark Ale, and will go on to contend for best overall dark beer.

The brewery opened up in downtown Nanaimo in 2015 and says it’s a small operation compared to others on Vancouver Island.

Owners say that makes the company’s latest distinction all the more important.

“This kind of recognition shows us we’re on the right track. The awards represent another step in White Sails’ evolution and growth as an island destination for craft beer,” said brewmaster Tyler Papp.

The dark ale will now move on to judging with other category leaders, and the top eight “World’s Best” beers will be named on Sept. 21
