A 73-year-old Nanaimo woman is fighting for her life after she was pinned under her vehicle and dragged down the length of her driveway Thursday night.

Investigators say the woman became trapped under the vehicle and it began to roll backward, but it’s unclear how that happened.

A neighbour who witnessed the horrific ordeal sprang into action with a car jack, lifting the vehicle off the woman and pulling her out from underneath.

Paramedics treated her at the scene before transporting her to a local hospital. She was later taken by ambulance to a Victoria hospital where she remains in critical, life-threatening condition, according to RCMP.

An RCMP traffic collision reconstructionist was called in to try to determine how the incident happened.

“Investigators have determined after speaking with witnesses that the vehicle was not turned on at the time of the accident, but they are unsure how it is that the female ended up becoming pinned underneath it then being dragged,” Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O'Brien said in a statement.

The woman’s family has been notified and an RCMP victim services unit has been called in to assist those involved.
