A cyclist who collided with a vehicle and was pinned underneath it on a rural Saanich road is not expected to survive his injuries, police say.

A 42-year-old man from Calgary was travelling along Prospect Lake Road near Munn Road with a group of cyclists on Tuesday afternoon when he lost control of his bike, slid across the centre line and hit a service vehicle.

The cyclist was pinned under the van and had to be extracted by emergency crews. He was rushed to hospital with significant injuries.

Police say investigators gathered evidence from the scene and have spoken with witnesses as well as the driver of the Shaw Cable van involved in the crash.

According to officials, the driver of the van is not at fault and speed did not play a factor in the crash.

The cyclist’s family was contacted and has travelled to Victoria to be with the man.

With the weather warming up, police are reminding cyclists and drivers to remain vigilant on the road.
