A controversial plan to send a group of Capital Regional District directors on a tour of sewage plants overseas has gone down the drain.
At a board meeting Wednesday, the CRD shot down the idea of sending representatives to look at eight European sewage plants in October.
The trip would have included three elected officials and two staff members and cost more than $8,000 per person.
Metchosin Mayor John Ranns and Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell had previously spoken out against the plan, calling it nothing more than a taxpayer-funded junket.
Plans are underway for a new sewage treatment plant that will be built at McLaughlin Point in Esquimalt.
The $765-million project has been years in the making and is expected to be built by the end of 2020 in order to meet provincial and federal regulations surrounding wastewater treatment.
