Eight new buses will soon be on roads in Greater Victoria and more trips on several routes will reduce wait times for passengers, BC Transit announced on Tuesday.

The province is investing $1.63-million for the new buses, 20,000 extra service hours, additional trips on many routes and expanded service to growing areas of the region, including the Westshore.

“We are committed to delivering an efficient and effective transit system that connects people and communities in the Victoria region,” said Manuel Achadinha, BC Transit President and Chief Executive Officer. “This additional funding will allow us to improve service reliability and meet the growing demands of our customers.”

The Victoria Regional Transit Commission says the service expansion will begin in September.

According to BC Transit, the additional funding is an interim solution to support the expansion of transit services for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

It will continue to work with the Ministry of Transportation on a longer term solution that supports transit service needs in Victoria.
