The beginning of B.C. Day long weekend could be off to a frustrating start for drivers travelling to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

Those heading to Swartz Bay from Tsawwassen were faced with an hours-long wait, as the 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. ferries were fully booked by early Friday afternoon.

The 6 p.m. ferry reached capacity just before 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, ferries from Tsawwassen to Duke Point near Nanaimo were nearly booked up as well, with the 3:15 p.m., 5:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. completely full.

The 10:45 p.m. sailing reached 80 per cent capacity hours earlier in the day.

It wasn’t just visitors to Vancouver Island who were faced with an excruciatingly long wait.

Those trying to get to the Southern Gulf Islands were out of luck, as all sailing for the day had been completely booked up by 3:30 p.m.

The next ferry to the islands was scheduled for Saturday at 8:40 a.m.

Those heading to Tsawwassen from the Island had a much easier time, with a one-sail wait at Swartz Bay and no wait at Duke Point.
