A 25-year-old Courtenay man who had been missing for almost a year has been found dead, according to officials.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Willem James Rennie has passed away,” Rennie’s family wrote on Facebook. “After missing for 11.5 months he has come home to his family.”

Comox Valley RCMP say the body of a man who was last seen on April 19, 2016 was found on April 2, 2017.

In a statement the family says it’s been a difficult year and they are “relieved to finally have closure.”

Rennie was last seen in April 2016 in the Courtenay area.

He was supposed to meet up with a former girlfriend at the Courtenay Exhibition Grounds on Headquarters Road, but never showed up.

His 1999 blue Chevrolet pickup truck was later discovered at the fairgrounds.

Officials have not said where Rennie’s body was found.

Comox Valley RCMP say the cause of death is not considered suspicious at this time.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating.

Rennie’s family says a celebration of life will be held sometime in the summer.
