A kayaker is in hospital after falling off his vessel and spending 25 minutes in the water.

The man’s kayak flipped and sank around 9 p.m. off Gabriola Island.

The B.C. Ferries Coastal Renaissance was nearby and launched a life raft. But it was a coast guard auxiliary vessel out of Nanaimo that managed to reach the man and pull him out of the water.

The kayaker was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. According to Victoria’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre he is believed to be doing okay.
