A 94-year-old man was killed in an early morning house fire at his mobile home just outside of Comox.

Fire crews were called to a fully involved blaze at a double-wide trailer in a rural part of town around 4 a.m. Monday.

Neighbours at the scene said they believed the elderly man was still trapped inside, forcing first responders to work quickly.

"Our crew arrived, we pulled a couple of hose lines right away, tried the main entry in the front but the front had already collapsed so we couldn't do that," said Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner.

Firefighters then cut their way through a side wall so they could search the interior of the trailer.

The man was eventually found dead inside of a bathroom.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and the BC Coroners Service says it is following up on a tip that the victim's son may have also been in the home Sunday night.

An investigation by RCMP and the coroners service is ongoing.
