It’s a crime that might fall into the category of a very harsh prank – with some even harsher consequences for a Colwood family.

They’re trying to identify six young men who were caught on security camera lifting up a treasured family truck and flipping it into a ditch Tuesday night.

“It just makes no sense. It doesn’t. This truck was my wife’s dad’s. He bought this brand-new,” said truck owner Dave Spittall, who is retired from the Canadian Armed Forces along with his wife. “In his honour I’ve always looked after this truck. It was in pristine shape up until this happened. It’s only got 173,000 (kilometres) on it, and it’s a ’93.”

The act of vandalism caused major damage to the truck’s roof and side panels.

But offers to repair it have already streamed in since Spittal’s neighbour posted about the incident on Facebook.

“Dave and Bonnie are both retired Canadian Armed Forces veterans and are amazing people who would give you the shirt off their back,” he said. “This is just a senseless act and those responsible need to be found.”

In the post, Pat Arsenault said the truck-flipping happened at 3:01 a.m. on Langholme Street.

He said he’ll be turning over surveillance video of the incident to Westshore RCMP.
