Parks Canada has urged hikers planning to tackle Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail to delay the start of their trip over concerns of hazardous, unpredictable conditions.

Parts of the 75-kilometre-long trail, which runs from Bamfield to Port Renfrew, are experiencing flooding and washouts as heavy rain soaks the Island.

Both the Michigan and Darling rivers are running at high levels, making both bodies of water impassable, according to Parks Canada.

That means hikers waiting to get on and off the trail via the Gordon River ferry crossing could face delays and should be prepared to wait, the agency warned.

As a results, it’s asking hikers to delay their start by 24 hours or until conditions improve.
