Firefighters were called to rescue two girls who got stuck while climbing a railway trestle between Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

Crews from Parksville Volunteer Fire Department and Qualicum Beach Fire Department were called to the E&N rail trestle over French Creek just after 6 p.m. Thursday.

The two youths climbing the structure got scared after going too high and called 911 for help, according to Parksville Fire Chief Marc Norris.

Firefighters used a ground ladder and rope system to help bring them down and no one was injured in the incident.

Norris called it a “completely avoidable” call that could have put first responders at risk.

"It’s an impressive train trestle. It’s well worth taking a look at it but it’s best done safely from the ground,” said Norris. “It’s one of those things where we’re just happy everybody came out of it safely and we can suggest that people think twice about that.”

He said RCMP on scene informed the girls they were technically trespassing and then brought them to their parents.
