A rest stop near Port Alberni will be one of a handful across the province to offer free Wi-Fi later this year.

The government says it’s installing free public Wi-Fi, in partnership with Telus and ICBC, to help drivers stay connected while avoiding using their phones on the road.

The first free Wi-Fi station went live Tuesday at the Glacier View rest area near Smithers.

The Taylor River rest stop on Highway 4, about 37 kilometres west of Port Alberni, will be one of six stops to get internet later this year, including others near Merrit, Nakusp and Tete Jaune.

The government has created a new rest area sign that includes a Wi-Fi symbol to indicate where the service will be offered.

More internet-connected rest areas will spring up throughout the province in the coming years, with the government pledging to create 25 in total.
