A new facility opens today in Victoria, offering housing to homeless residents of the capital city.

The Victoria Central Care Home is a key part of the provincial government's response to a tent city that has been set up in Victoria's downtown core for almost a year.

About eight to 10 people will be accepted at the facility today but it will eventually provide up to 140 units for long-term supportive housing.

The formerly vacant building will be run by the Portland Hotel Society and Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says it's also great to see the old structure used for something good.
