A highly anticipated football game in Langford was marred by an ugly incident when a man tossed coffee into a teenage player’s face on a dare, according to RCMP.

The Oct. 15 game between the Westshore Rebels and Vancouver Island Raiders was in the second half when police were called to Westhills Stadium at around 9 p.m.

"All the while that Rebels drive was going on, there was major confusion and distraction at the Raiders bench," an announcer is heard saying at 12:31 of the fourth quarter. "A fan ran up to the fence and threw a drink into the face of the Raiders quarterback Jake Laberge."

The ensuing scene was described as a "fracas" by the announcers, who noted they couldn't see any security personnel on the field in the aftermath of the incident.

"The Raider bench is pretty much in the crowd, it's right up on the fence and the fence is only waist height," he says. "People are chasing down the tunnel, quite the scene going on and no security to be seen."

Attending officers arrested an intoxicated 22-year-old Colwood man, apparently a Rebels fan, who had thrown his coffee into the face of 18-year-old Raiders quarterback Jacob Laberge.

“This disgraceful act was apparently motivated by a bet with the suspect’s friends,” West Shore RCMP spokesman Const. Alex Berube said in a statement.

The man faces an assault charge and has been released from custody on a promise to appear in court Dec. 29, and has also been banned from Westhills Stadium.

While the Rebels won the game, team president Doug Kobayashi released a statement apologizing to the Raiders for the fan’s behaviour.

“We have a zero tolerance policy on the behaviour shown toward your player,” Kobayashi said. “The spectator involved in this incident will be banned from all our future football games at the stadium and is being dealt with by police.”

The Rebels won the game 34-29 and will advance to the Cullen Cup in the B.C. Junior Football Conference.
