A long-awaited rainfall on Vancouver Island that will see the first significant precipitation in months has prompted a special weather statement from Environment Canada.

With 80 to 120 millimetres of rain expected to fall on B.C.’s south coast over the weekend, the agency is warning of possible flash flooding and slippery roads.

Drought conditions across the Island have left the dry soil with a reduced capacity to absorb water, meaning flash flooding is possible everywhere but the North Island.

The agency recommends people remove debris from drain spouts and sewer covers to avoid flooding, and cautioned motorists not to drive across any flooded roads.

The rain is expected to ease up after the weekend, with a chance of showers Monday and Tuesday.
