Heavy rain in the Nanaimo area for the first time in months led to three vehicle rollovers in a matter of minutes on Tuesday.

Mounties say no one was seriously injured in separate crashes that occurred on the Duke Point Highway, near the Country Club Centre and near Norwell Drive.

All of the vehicles flipped and ended up in the ditch, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

The collision prompted police to issue a warning to drivers, saying the wet weather serves as a wake-up call.

“What the driver’s don’t understand is there a lot of oils that develop over the summer,” said Const. Gary O’Brien. “As the rain came hard the oils come up and the first thing they seem they have to stop unexpectedly. The hit their brakes, they start to hydroplane, they overreact.”

Mounties are asking drivers to slow down amid the changing weather conditions.
