SAANICH - Police arrested a 42-year-old man in connection to a fire hydrant incident that flooded a Saanich home.

Around 11pm Wednesday, emergency crews responded to reports of water gushing from hydrants near the intersection of North Dairy Road and Doncaster Drive. There was a joint response from Saanich Police, Saanich Fire, Victoria Police and Victoria Fire Departments.

Investigators discovered that three fire hydrants had been opened. One was in Victoria, and two were in Saanich.

There was enough water to flood the basement of one Saanich home on North Dairy, which racked up damages costing well over $5,000.

With the help of VicPD's K9 team, an 18 inch wrench was found nearby, which was believed to be the tool used to open the hydrants.

Police say witnesses were key in identifying the suspect. He was released pending a future court appearance.
