BC Hydro says continued freezing temperatures across the province have pushed electricity demand to a new high for the year.

The utility says demand peaked at 9,869 megawatts between 5 and 6 p.m. yesterday, setting a new record for 2016.

That's nearly 1,500 megawatts higher than last Thursday's peak demand - an increase of 18 per cent.

BC Hydro expects demand will remain higher than normal as the cold weather continues.
