Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton says the Victoria-area suburb is very interested in acquiring part of the Royal Roads lands currently owned by the Department of National Defence.

The department has revealed it wants to divest the land, which is now home to Royal Roads University, but has belonged to the military since 1940 when the former Hatley Park estate was purchased for military uses.

Hamilton says the property is a significant piece within Colwood, but she also acknowledges the Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation hope to regain the land, and negotiations are ongoing.

She says Colwood wants to keep the conversation open and determine if it can have a role in future decisions about the property.
