In a sad end to a strange story, a deer died after it smashed through a front window of an unoccupied Saanich home over the weekend.

Saanich police were called to the home on the quiet cul-de-sac of Knutsford Place after someone reported seeing the broken window.

Officers arrived to find something they’ve never seen before.

“Our officers attended and did find a deer inside that home. We were able to get the deer outside,” said Saanich police spokesman Sgt. Jereme Leslie.

They noticed the animal was covered in blood and had suffered an injury to one of its rear legs.

A neighbour said the messy scene was the unfortunate result of the frightened deer being chased by a dog.

“A deer had been chased by a dog, ran through the window, broke the window and he was cut and they were trying to catch it,” said Eleanor Randell.

The homeowners haven’t been seen in months and three days after the incident likely still have no idea of what happened.

As for the deer, it was transported to WildARC rehabilitation centre for treatment, but its leg was so badly injured that it had to be put down.

Saanich police say reports of deer-human encounters are actually down this year, and called the situation a freak accident.
