Major police agencies in the Capital Region will consolidate dispatch services to improve quality and speed of emergency response, the CRD announced Monday.

The South Island Dispatch Centre will open in 2019 in a new state-of-the-art facility that will field calls for service for Victoria, Saanich, Central Saanich and Oak Bay police departments as well as all local RCMP detachments.

Combining the South Island’s dispatch services will improve coordination between agencies “so they can better respond to large emergencies that cross municipal boundaries,” said Minister of Public Safety Mike Morris.

The new model is said to be the largest emergency communications service provider in B.C.

The CRD-owned facility, estimated at a cost of $16,000,000, will be built on Commerce Circle in Saanich.
