A road in the Cowichan Valley that collapsed under significant rain earlier this week has reopened.

Cowichan Lake Road was closed after a sinkhole formed on Wednesday.

People who live in the area were worried the entire road might collapse because of the intensity of the river.

“The soil got saturated and basically washed into the creek and it undermined until about the centre line of the road [..] the road was at that point was deemed unsafe,” said bridge supervisor with Mainroad South Island, Luke Maron.

Crews brought in an excavator Thursday afternoon to fill in the sinkhole.

“Unfortunately with the weather that we’ve had and the rainfall these situations are possible at the time of the year,” said Maron.
