A convicted criminal who used his mother’s funeral in Port Alberni to escape was arrested on Friday.

Mounties didn’t say where David Blackmore was located only that they arrested him without incident around 8:40 p.m.

Blackmore, who was serving time at the Nanaimo Correctional Centre crimes including drug and stolen property offences, was granted permission to attend the service at the Yates Funeral Home on Gertrude Street on Tuesday.

Correctional facility staff escorted him to the proceedings, but while he was paying his respects Blackmore escaped out of a back door of the funeral home.
