City crews in Esquimalt are mopping up an oil spill on the Gorge Waterway and trying to determine the source of the leak.

Officials said public works crews first noticed the spill at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the water near Sioux Place and Esquimalt Gorge Park.

Booms and tiles have been placed in the water to help contain and absorb the spill, which has been confined to a man-made tributary of the Gorge.

It’s unclear how much material has spilled into the water, and crews are still trying to pinpoint exactly what the substance is.

The Ministry of Environment has been notified of the spill, and so has the BC SPCA’s Wild Arc animal rehabilitation centre, in case water fowl are affected.

The Township said clean-up efforts will continue for several days, and is urging dog owners to keep their pets out of the water in that area.
