The Canadian Coast Guard is en route to a broken-down cargo ship drifting off the coast of Haida Gwaii, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said Tuesday.

A vessel called the North Star lost propulsion due to an electrical issue about 50 nautical miles off the west coast of the island Tuesday morning.

The ship was travelling from Anchorage, Alaska to Tacoma, Washington when it broke down, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

A combined three vessels have been launched to tow the North Star to port if necessary, including the CCGS Gordon Reid.

It’s unclear how many crew members are aboard the cargo ship or what material it’s carrying.

It is expected that the Coast Guard vessel, en route from Prince Rupert, will meet up with the North Star at around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
