The City of Victoria wants to ask the public whether it should cough up tens of millions on a replacement facility for Crystal Pool.

At a meeting Thursday night, council approved a recommendation to hold a referendum on whether to spend $70-million to rebuild the aging Quadra Street recreation centre.

Council has already approved that $10-million for the project would come from the city's buildings and infrastructure reserve, while the rest would be obtained through borrowing and other funding sources.

It's the borrowing question that will be put before Victoria residents once the city has looked at additional funding methods.

The city wants to hold the referendum later this year, and will be looking for final approval at a Feb. 23 council meeting.

Once a decision is made, shovels could hit the ground by 2018.

The current facility was built 45 years ago.
