Thousands of people across the province will be shutting off their lights and electronics for 60 minutes Saturday evening in honour of Earth Hour.

The annual event started by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 aims to raise awareness about the damaging effects of climate change.

The BC government says it will be shutting off the Jubilee Lights at the legislature in Victoria, the lights on the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver, and any other non-essential lights and electronics at government buildings between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.

More than 7,000 cities are participating in the event worldwide.
