A brazen thief made off with a Victoria police officer’s mountain bike in broad daylight Wednesday morning, according to officials.

It happened in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue when an officer on a bike stopped to talk to a person who appeared in distress, according to Victoria Police spokesman Bowen Osoko.

She was standing mere feet from the bike, which wasn’t locked up, when a man allegedly hopped on and took off.

Police said the bike may have changed hands since it was taken, and there are reports it was last seen heading toward the Galloping Goose trail.

“Bike theft is one of the largest concerns that face people in Victoria,” Osoko said. “The irony is not lost that today, we ourselves are facing it.”

He said he’s confident police will be able to track down the black mountain bike, emblazoned with ‘Police’ on the side in white letters.

“It takes a certain lack of thinking for someone to grab one of our bikes and run off with it,” Osoko said.

Police are now keeping an eye out for anyone seen riding the mountain bike.
