Police say it’s unclear whether foul play is involved after a fisherman discovered a body in a Salt Spring Island creek over the weekend.

The recreational fisherman called police at around 6:15 p.m. Saturday after spotting the body of a man in the south bank of a creek near Fulford Harbour, according to Salt Spring RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service couldn’t immediately pinpoint the cause of death, and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has since been called in to investigate.

Police say there’s no indication Salt Spring Island residents are at risk.

The man’s next-of-kin has been notified of his death but police aren’t yet releasing his identity.

An area near the closed Fulford Inn, where the body was found, remained behind police tape Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Salt Spring RCMP at 250-537-5555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
