The second of three new ferries soon to go into service in B.C. is getting a taste of the open ocean as it makes its way toward the province following its construction in Poland.

BC Ferries says the Salish Eagle has left the Canary Islands, off the coast of northwestern Africa, and is now crossing the Atlantic Ocean en route to the Panama Canal.

The corporation will take final acceptance and ownership of the dual-fuel ship, capable of running on diesel or liquefied natural gas, after an inspection when it reaches B.C. sometime late next month or in early April.

The first of the three vessels, the Salish Orca, is already undergoing sea and dock trials around Georgia Strait and is expected to go into service on the Comox-Powell River route this spring, while the third of the low-emission ferries is still under construction in Poland.
