BC Ferries cancelled several sailings between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland on Sunday as cooler air moved through the South Coast.

Sailings between Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen were cancelled until 3 p.m. due to high winds.

The Tsawwassen to Duke Point route was also affected by the weather.

A special weather statement was issued for Greater Victoria, forecasting showers and flurries for Sunday night and Monday.

Temperatures are expected to fall close to the freezing mark and could possibly result in snowfall.

According to the City of Victoria, higher elevations like the Malahat are more likely to see flurries.

The weather warnings had crews preparing fleets of trucks with plows and salt bins to hit the road if need be.

City Works crews said they haven’t used a plow in roughly three years, but are better prepared than they were for events like the blizzard of 1996.

Our Place Society in Victoria increased its staff to prepare hot meals and go around the community to check on those in need.

The community centre said it’s always in desperate need of socks and underwear as well as warm jackets, boots, mitts and hats.

Our Place will also operate a warming station with snacks and hot beverages.

The cold weather is expected to last throughout the week with temperatures dropping through Tuesday and more snow forecast for Thursday.
