In anticipation of the busy holiday travel season, BC Ferries is adding 176 extra sailings and asking passengers to plan ahead.

The additional sailings will be added to routes between Dec. 21 and Jan. 2.

BC Ferries says 130 of the extra sailings will be added to the high-traffic Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route, while 46 more will be added between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay.

Eight extra sailings will be scheduled for the Horseshoe Bay-Langdale route.

Six a.m. sailings will be added in both directions between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay to help ease the traffic crunch on Dec. 23, 26 and 27.

BC Ferries says it expects Dec. 23 to be the busiest pre-Christmas travel day and estimates Dec. 27 to be the busiest travel day for the holiday season.

The company is encouraging travellers to take advantage of a discounted $10 reservation fee if they book seven or more days in advance.
