A coalition of small and medium-sized B.C. wineries wants the provincial government to put a cork in plans to sell wines in grocery stores.

The BC Alliance for Smart Liquor Retail Choices is calling for a six-month moratorium -- arguing grocery wine sales could put small wineries at risk.

Spokesman Ken Pullen says grocery stores focus on price and will bring in the cheapest wines from large wineries, possibly forcing B.C.'s boutique wineries out of business.

Pullen also fears the grocery store VQA licenses would fail a North American Free Trade Agreement challenge, opening up shelves to international wines, which would squeeze out local vintages.
