A car that burst into flames in Saanich Thursday actually melted to the ground from the intense heat.

Firefighters responded to the car fire at Inlet Avenue and Gorge Road West just before 2 p.m.

They arrived to smoke billowing from the hood of a Cadillac with visible flames and tires exploding from the heat.

“We never know what’s in the car when it’s burning. The tires themselves exploded. One tire exploded when a police officer was here before we arrived, so it was a bit of a shock to him,” said Lt. Kevin Packford of Saanich Fire Department. “The hazards of a car, there’s many. There’s fuel, there’s oil, there’s what’s in the vehicle.”

Crews managed to extinguish the blaze

Firefighters found a large red jerrycan in the trunk of the vehicle, which was determined to have been abandoned.

No one was injured and police are now investigating the blaze.
